At one point it was pot-bellied pigs, then ferrets and Chihuahuas. The newest pet du Jour…. Chickens! Ok, they aren’t eggsactly cuddly, but they have a lot to give their owners (one egg per day depending on environmental and stress conditions) and aren’t as apt to end up at the animal shelter.
When actress Jennifer Aniston remodeled her multi-million dollar estate, the first thing she did was install an A-List chicken coop. Bette Midler, another self-proclaimed chicken farmer, named her brood after the Kardashian sisters. And if you get a chance to see Susan Sarandon ‘s film ” The Meddler” , you’ll love the climactic scene when she makes eggs in the hole from one of J. K. Simmons ‘ pet cluckers. Very sexy.
Once you’ve had a backyard egg, you’ll find it hard to go back to the grocery store for a carton. The urban farming trend is thriving and crosses all socio-economic borders.
Susan Klos is a Green Realtor and At-Large Director of the Mar Vista Community Council. She lives near one of the busiest intersections in Los Angeles, California and her backyard is home to four hens , two cats and a small citrus grove. Susan’s love of the backyard fowl came from her mentor, the beloved late L.A. City Councilman Bill Rosendahl.
